Canola Watch – Annual CCA/CCSC exam and Community Connections

Canola Watch 2021 exam

Section 1 – 4R nutrient management

All farms will benefit from applying the right fertilizer products at the right rate, right time and right place – the “4Rs”. 4R nutrient management can improve the return on investment for fertilizer, improve overall farm sustainability, and reduce nutrient runoff into waterways and emissions into the air. 4R is an important Canola Council of Canada agronomy objective. This section has 20 questions on 4R. Pass to earn 2 credits. Take Section 1 of the exam.

Section 2 – Seed decisions

What are the most useful seed traits for each field? Choices can include disease resistance, days to maturity, pod-shatter resistance and more. This section has 10 questions to help you determine the best canola cultivar for each field. Pass to earn 1 credit. Take Section 2 of the exam.

Section 3 – Plant establishment

A stand with five to eight plants per square foot can maintain the yield potential of canola. Take steps to achieve five to eight for all square feet across the field, and to have all plants at the same stage. This section has 10 questions to help you improve canola stand establishment. Pass to earn 1 credit. Take Section 3 of the exam.

Section 4 – Pest management

An important first step in pest management is to scout regularly to see what pests, environmental factors or mechanical issues (seed placement, sprayer settings, etc.) cause the greatest loss in each field. This section has 20 questions that will help you identify and manage the top yield robbers. Pass to earn 2 credits. Take Section 4 of the exam.

Section 5 – Harvest and storage

The ideal end-of-season objectives are to give all seeds time to mature, harvest with minimal losses and store canola without spoilage. By harvesting all seeds and delivering them at No.1 grade, growers capture the greatest value from the crop. This section has 10 questions on that theme. Pass to earn 1 credit. Take Section 5 of the exam.
